bowing / leaning FOUNDATION wall

defining a bowing or leaning foundation wall

At A Glance

A bowing foundation wall, leaning foundation wall, or tilting foundation wall generally occurs when hydro-static pressure builds up on your foundation wall, be it concrete, block, or stone.

Foundations are built to withstand an abundance of weight vertically, however, foundation walls can only take on so much weight horizontally before it begins to bow, lean, tilt.

What To Look For

To continue our promise to our Homeowners or Prospective Homeowners, we've complied a list of things to monitor when you believe you may have a bowing foundation wall:

  • Finished basements may experience cracks in drywall or plumbing exposed through drywall.
  • Block foundations will generally develop a horizontal crack.
  • Stone foundations will begin to lose stone more rapidly.
  • Spacing between siding and your foundation wall will widen.

Identifying a bowing foundation wall, leaning foundation wall, or tilting foundation wall is simplistic in nature.

Foundations are built to be straight, drywall is laid flat, and siding it tucked tight.  Anything outside of those norms should be cause for concern.
